Armen Amirkhanian

Armen Amirkhanian, P.E., Ph.D., earned his B.S. in Ceramic and Material Science Engineering from Clemson University. He then received a M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After graduating, he worked as a post-doc for Dr. Jason Weiss at Oregon State University. He is currently an Assistant Professor at The University of Alabama and his research interests are broadly based in infrastructure materials characterization, with a primary focus on cementitious materials. He is a Professional Engineer (P.E.) registered in Oregon, Alabama, and South Carolina.
Current research topics entail exploring the areas of alkali-silica degradation characterization, atomic-scale characterization of alkali-activated materials, and durability issues associated with concrete pavement rehabilitation. Dr. Amirkhanian has previously and/or currently worked with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, the O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).
Currently, he teaches courses in Civil Engineering Materials, Horizontal Construction Methods, and Non-Destructive Testing Techniques. Dr. Amirkhanian is an active member in ACI, TRB, and ASCE. Dr. Amirkhanian will serve as the ISCP Communications Director as well as a Member of the Board of Directors.
