STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Each month, or every other month, a student will provide a 1-page illustrated abstract of the research they are currently conducting. This is a wonderful opportunity for the student, for our International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) Members, and for the transferring and sharing technology/research through our concrete paving industry.
The ISCP “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” for August 2024 is Andrés Gabriel César Torres, a Ph.D student in Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil).
BIO:
Andrés Gabriel César Torres is a Ph.D. Candidate at Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil), under the supervision of Prof. José Tadeu Balbo. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Technological University of Panamá, Panamá and master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Concepción, Chile. Andrés’ research interests include the structural and sustainable assessment of pavement alternatives and development of sustainable and eco-efficient infrastructure. His Ph.D. research is focused on the performance analysis of self-compacting concrete pavement for urban roads.
TITLE:
Performance analysis of self-compacting concrete pavements for urban roads
Road infrastructure is one of the main assets of a state. Particularly for urban areas, land routes are the main mobility system, therefore have a special role in the accessibility to employment, health services, education and recreation. Due to the importance of the roads in the urban context, it is relevant to guarantee a reliable, durable and safe performance during the service life of the infrastructure. Furthermore, aspects such as construction and maintenance times must be considered to prevent significant traffic jam and impacts on users’ travel times.
Motivated to contribute to the improvement of the performance of urban pavements, a full-scale self-compacting concrete (SCC) pavement section has been developed at the University of São Paulo (Figure 1).
The SCC has the ability to flow and consolidate naturally, without the need of internal or external compaction, and satisfying the design strength conditions. Hence the vibrating procedure is not a requirement. The use of this concrete represents less workforce and specialised equipment. In addition, the construction times can be reduced.
Currently, the first tests on the pavement performance are being carried out. Starting with the surface condition, International Roughness Index (IRI) and macrotexture texture measured by sand patch were registered. Regarding the IRI test, average value of 8.3 m/km was reported. This value is higher than the limit value of 2.7 m/km indicated in Brazilian standards. This result may be due to the manual construction process. Therefore, better IRI results are expected for a mechanized construction process. The sand patch results present an average height of 0.74 mm, matching the requirements indicated by Brazilian specifications on road safety (0.60 mm < SH < 1.20 mm). This result indicates that it is possible to obtain a suitable macrotexture quality for urban roads based on SCC (Figure 2).
In the following stages of the project, the structural response of the pavement to loads and climate conditions will be evaluated. The results of the project are expected to contribute to the development on design, construction and in-service response knowledge of this proposed pavement solution.
ISCP would like to feature a “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” each month, or every other month. If you would like to nominate a student, or if you are a student and would like to nominate yourself or a colleague, please send ISCP an email to: newsletter@concretepavements.org
