“STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” July 2024

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Each month, or every other month, a student will provide a 1-page illustrated abstract of the research they are currently conducting. This is a wonderful opportunity for the student, for our International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) Members, and for the transferring and sharing technology/research through our concrete paving industry.

The ISCP “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” for July 2024 is Tianzhen Li, a Ph.D student in Civil Engineering at the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the University of Liverpool (Suzhou, China).

BIO:

My name is Tianzhen Li, and I am a third-year PhD student in Civil Engineering at the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the University of Liverpool under the supervision of Prof. Xiaonan Tang. My research focuses on sustainable construction materials, pervious concrete, waste utilization, and CO2 emissions. I am currently engaged in the development of different types of pervious concrete pavements, incorporating various solid waste materials (travertine, etc.) to evaluate their practical efficacy in reducing runoff and heavy metal containment capabilities.

TITLE:
Utilizing Travertine Waste Materials in Pervious Concrete Pavement for Runoff Reduction and Heavy Metal Mitigation

Recently, as urbanization continues to accelerate, more and more traditional impermeable surfaces have prevented rainfall from rapidly infiltrating the ground, leading to severe flooding and water pollution problems. One of the most effective ways to solve this problem is to increase the area of permeable concrete pavement on urban surfaces, which can effectively reduce the burden on urban drainage facilities and improve the quality of water bodies.

As travertine cutting stone pieces and powder have no practical use, they have been classified as solid waste and are usually dumped in landfills with adverse environmental and economic impacts. Hence, this study aims to develop different types of pervious concrete pavements using travertine waste to evaluate their structural performance, hydraulic properties, and heavy metal removal capacities. One of the pavement rainfall systems is shown below.

Fig. 1 The actual diagram of the rainfall simulation system for TPCP

As the evaluation indexes of the final performance of pervious concrete, the compressive strength and permeability coefficient of travertine pervious concrete (TPC) with different waste travertine aggregate replacement levels are shown below.

Fig. 2 The effect of waste travertine aggregate on the performance of TPC

ISCP would like to feature a “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” each month, or every other month. If you would like to nominate a student, or if you are a student and would like to nominate yourself or a colleague, please send ISCP an email to: newsletter@concretepavements.org
