“STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” May 2024

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Each month, or every other month, a student will provide a 1-page illustrated abstract of the research they are currently conducting. This is a wonderful opportunity for the student, for our International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) Members, and for the transferring and sharing technology/research through our concrete paving industry.

The ISCP “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” for May 2024 is Shivani Sharma, a Ph.D student in Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (Gandhinagar, India).

BIO:

My name is Shivani Sharma, and I am currently pursuing my PhD in Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. My research focuses on High Strength Concrete, utilizing Supplementary Cementitious Materials, and Fiber Reinforced Concrete. Recently, we have developed a composite fiber that increases the maximum compressive strain of concrete. In my free time, I enjoy writing poems.

TITLE:
Exploring Ductility in Singly Reinforced Fiber Reinforced Beams: Insights from Three-Point Bending Tests

Fiber reinforced concrete blends traditional concrete with reinforcing fibers, enhancing its tensile strength and ductility while controlling cracking and improving resistance to impact and fatigue. Steel, polypropylene, glass, and carbon fibers offer varied properties, catering to diverse structural needs. However, challenges arise from the non-uniform distribution and poor orientation of metallic fibers, as well as the lower strength of non-metallic fibers. This issue is addressed by this innovative composite fiber, ensuring uniform dispersion within the mix. Additionally, the use of these fibers in concrete is expected to significantly increase the ultimate deformation capacity of beams. To investigate this, a three-point bending test was conducted on singly reinforced beams, and the results of the load-deflection profiles are displayed below.

 Singly Reinforced beam without fibers
Singly Reinforced beam with 1% fiber dosage

The results demonstrate a notable enhancement in the ductile behavior and flexural response of beam, particularly in the case of singly reinforced beams with fiber dosages of 1% (volume replacement), compared to the control beam sample with 0% fiber content. This indicates an approximate 70% improvement in ductility with the addition of fibers. This suggests that the incorporation of these fibers effectively mitigates the risk of concrete collapse during disasters, a critical factor in preserving lives.

ISCP would like to feature a “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” each month, or every other month. If you would like to nominate a student, or if you are a student and would like to nominate yourself or a colleague, please send ISCP an email to: newsletter@concretepavements.org
