STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Each month, or every other month, a student will provide a 1-page illustrated abstract of the research they are currently conducting. This is a wonderful opportunity for the student, for our International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) Members, and for the transferring and sharing technology/research through our concrete paving industry.
The ISCP “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” for April 2024 is Etienne Beya Nkongolo, a Ph.D student at the University of Missouri Kansas-City (Kansas City, USA).
BIO:
My name is Etienne Beya Nkongolo, I am currently pursuing my PhD. At the University of Missouri Kansas-City in Civil Engineering and Geosciences. I live in Kansas-City (Missouri). My areas of expertise are construction materials and rigid pavement design. My latest article has been accepted and ready to be published by Transportation Research Record (TRR). As a personal goal, I am always looking forward to finding a solution to most challenging situations in life and always open to embrace new challenges, to learn and adapt. I love reading and watching soccer during my free time.
TITLE:
Timely and uniform application of curing compound on concrete pavements
Concrete curing is the act of maintaining adequate moisture and temperature in the concrete to maximize the hydration process and hydration ceases when the relative humidity falls below 80%. While a variety of curing techniques are used, including wet curing, internal curing, and forced chemical curing, membrane-forming curing compounds are often the easiest and most cost-effective technique to minimize moisture evaporation. Concrete curing is crucial to reduce early age cracking and for the development of desired hardened concrete properties. Conversely, poor curing results in premature deterioration in the form of plastic and drying shrinkage cracking, scaling, joint spalling, and freeze-thaw deterioration.
However, assessing curing compound application rate and effectiveness on freshly paved concrete is difficult, as most evaluation methods are performed on hardened concrete, making them difficult to be useful in the field on fresh concrete. This study proposes electrical resistance as a technique to assess moisture content in fresh concrete to quantify the effectiveness of curing. The resistance measurement device used in this study is a new methodology that can be used for both laboratory and field work and will provide solution to assessing curing effectiveness on fresh concrete. The findings of this study demonstrate that resistance can distinguish between samples with and without curing compound and differentiate between the quality and rate of curing compound application, and between the near-surface area and interior of concrete. The results from my investigation are presented in Figure 1 and Figure 2, where after casting, concrete were cured in two evaporative conditions (low and high).
ISCP would like to feature a “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” each month, or every other month. If you would like to nominate a student, or if you are a student and would like to nominate yourself or a colleague, please send ISCP an email to: newsletter@concretepavements.org
