In a corner of the bustling Las Vegas Convention Center’s Silver Lot, the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Mobile Concrete Technology Center (MCTC) emerged as a crucial player at this year’s World of Concrete event, writes Harlee Hewitt for Roads & Bridges. Led by Senior Concrete Engineer Mike Praul, the unassuming trailer embarks on a nationwide journey, responding to requests from state departments of transportation, construction companies, and contractors. Praul and his team conduct both destructive and nondestructive tests, providing valuable insights into material consistency, durability, and quality, particularly focusing on optimizing pavement applications.
As the MCTC trailer rolls onto job sites, it brings with it a comprehensive approach to concrete testing. Praul and his team kickstart their evaluation by collecting fresh concrete samples on day one, followed by on-site tests for concrete durability. These include a box test, gauging the mixture’s consolidation efficiency, and a surface resistivity test assessing resistance to chloride ion penetration. Beyond its testing capabilities, the MCTC also serves as an educational hub. During the second week of site visits, the team hosts open houses, inviting local agencies, contractors, and suppliers to witness firsthand the cutting-edge technologies that can enhance concrete performance, potentially revolutionizing industry standards.
Mike Praul emphasizes that the MCTC is not just a testing facility but a valuable resource for contractors. Whether it’s assisting in upgrading concrete specifications or imparting knowledge on innovative technologies and tests, the MCTC stands as a supportive ally for industry professionals. Looking ahead, the team is poised to unveil a new mobile technology center at the ACI Concrete Convention in Philadelphia, demonstrating their commitment to advancing education and expanding their impact within the concrete industry.
