STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Each month, or every other month, a student will provide a 1-page illustrated abstract of the research they are currently conducting. This is a wonderful opportunity for the student, for our International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) Members, and for the transferring and sharing technology/research through our concrete paving industry.
The ISCP “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” for August 2023 is Megan Darnell, a Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, USA).
BIO:
Megan Darnell is a first-year PhD student working under the advisement of Dr. Julie Vandenbossche at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As an undergraduate student, she worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) on bridge rehabilitation projects and began working as an undergraduate research assistant in the Pavement Mechanics and Materials Laboratory in her final semester. Megan obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in the spring of 2022 and began her graduate studies in the following term. Her primary area of research is focused on micro-mechanical characterization of fluid concrete under vibration, for which she has developed a small-scale experimental setup that simulates the construction process for slipform paving.
TITLE:
Optimizing Concrete Vibration for Slipform Paving
In slipform paving, using the correct amount of input energy during vibration is essential in preventing over- and under-consolidated concrete, which can lead to increased pavement distresses and poor ride quality. However, there is no current concrete test that can accurately determine how much input energy is required to properly consolidate a concrete mixture. The goal of this research is to develop a test that can determine the optimal level of vibration energy needed to prevent improper consolidation. A novel, small-scale experimental setup has been developed, meant to simulate the slipform paving process of a concrete slab, shown in Figure 1a. This will be used to evaluate aggregate and air distributions under different levels of vibration energy. The mixture design for this experimental setup includes aggregates, shown in Figure 1b, in which different colors correspond to different particle sizes. A particle analysis will allow us to understand how different energy levels impact these different aggregate sizes.
While fluid concrete is vibrated in the box, accelerometers record the vibration signal data. After the concrete hardens, the cube is cut into several slices and faces are scanned to conduct an image analysis on the coarse aggregates and the air void system, as shown in Figure 2.
The image analyses are performed to reconstruct a three-dimensional configuration of the aggregate and entrained air distributions from that experiment. Using these results, we can identify relationships between duration and intensity of vibration and the effective spatial density of the pavement. These relationships will then be used to develop guidelines that will define the optimal level of energy needed based on the characteristics of the concrete mixture. Funding for this this project is provided by the Impactful Resilient Infrastructure Science and Engineering (IRISE) Consortium at the University of Pittsburgh with Dr. Alessandro Fascetti serving as the PI.
ISCP would like to feature a “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” each month, or every other month. If you would like to nominate a student, or if you are a student and would like to nominate yourself or a colleague, please send ISCP an email to: newsletter@concretepavements.org
