ACI Foundation Announces Fellowship Award
Honoring JoAnne K. and Cecil L. Jones
The ACI Carolinas Chapter has recently committed funding to create a second honorary student fellowship award to honor one of its esteemed and active chapter members. Chad B. Hensley, William K. (Kenny) Johnson Jr., and Stephen R. Hahn pledged $75,000 on behalf of their chapter to establish the “JoAnne K. and Cecil L. Jones Carolinas Fellowship“.
The chapter named the new fellowship in honor of JoAnne and Cecil because of their tremendous dedication for the concrete community and the Carolinas Chapter of ACI.
Cecil L. Jones, FACI, President-Diversified Engineering Services, Inc., Raleigh, NC, USA, founded his Engineering Services in 2009. He provides consulting services to a wide range of clients, and performs:
• Transportation materials-related research
• Product evaluation and implementation of new technologies and materials
• Specification development
• Materials quality management
• Training
Jones has been active in ACI for more than 25 years and has served as Chair for several ACI committees. He was named the “2010 ACI Educational Activities Committee Member of the Year” and received the “2015 ACI Henry L. Kennedy Award”.
Anthony E. Fiorato Donates $25,000 to the ACI Foundation:

The ACI Foundation extends its gratitude to Anthony E. Fiorato, ACI Honorary Member, who recently donated $25,000 to the ACI Foundation Scholarship Fund requesting that the ACI Foundation use this gift to establish a new student award honoring Kenneth C. Hover, ACI Honorary Member, and his many contributions to educating and mentoring students. ACI is appreciative of his generosity and dedication to the industry and now to the ACI Foundation.
Fiorato has contributed to the industry through activities in technical societies and standards development organizations, lecturing and publishing, and serving in leadership roles. He has previously served as the Executive Director–The Slag Cement Association (SCA); President and CEO of CTLGroup; Vice President of Research and Technical Services-Portland Cement Association (PCA). Fiorato is a Fellow, Honorary Member, and Past President of ACI, and Honorary Member and Past Chair -Board of ASTM International. In 2008, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
Vilas S. Mujumdar Pledges $75,000 for Research

Vilas S. Mujumdar recently pledged $75,000 to the ACI Foundation with the desire to support meaningful concrete research that will enable the concrete industry as a whole system—not parts—to be resilient and face current societal issues, such as climate change.
Mujumdar explained that his “focus for this and future funding is to really think beyond just design and construction, and materials as a component, and to think about the entire [concrete] system and how to benefit society on a long-term basis.”
The ACI Foundation scholarship program serves the industry by establishing and distributing fellowships and scholarships to high-potential students in concrete-related graduate and undergraduate degree programs. Daniel W. Falconer Memorial Fellowship

Ziad Elaghoury, University of Western Ontario was the recipient of this year’s Daniel W. Falconer Memorial Fellowship.
“I am tremendously honored to have been selected as the recipient of the 2022 Daniel W. Falconer Memorial Fellowship. Although I have not had the pleasure of meeting the late Dan Falconer, I have read about his numerous contributions to the success of ACI, and I truly recognize the privilege in holding an award with his name. I will spare no effort in making sure that his name will continue to be associated with contributions to the advancement of ACI.”

ACI Foundation Establishes “Burg-Coleman Iowa State ‘77 Fellowship”
The ACI Foundation currently offers over 30 fellowships & scholarships for high potential students in concrete-related graduate & undergraduate degree programs. Applications for the 2023-2024 season opens on July 1, 2022!
Become a Fellowship Mentor
The ACI Foundation is seeking to improve its mentorship program and requests that you review the revised program goals containing new mentor requirements and a minimum time commitment before completing a fellowship mentor application.
Main Objectives of the Mentorship Program:
- Increase student awareness of the ACI Foundation and further engage them with ACI so that they stay in the concrete industry and stay involved with ACI/ACI Foundation
- Provide students an organized & consistent experience
- Increase the awareness of professional career development opportunities within ACI and the concrete industry
- Build a professional network to support students/mentees in their next steps in their careerpath in the concrete industry
