Just Released November 2014!
4th Edition of the CP Tech Center
Guide to Concrete Overlays
The intent of the 146-page 8-Chapter/4-Appendix Guide is to
increase the technical proficiency of experienced engineers
as well as to
provide less experienced team members with the basic knowledge needed
to address the needs of concrete overlay projects
Updates from the 2014 3rd Edition include:
—Current information on continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) overlays
—Geotextile separation layers
—Fiber reinforcement
—Concrete overlay design procedures
—Lessons learned from the experiences of numerous state highway agency engineers
Concrete overlays offer an economical, long-lasting solution for extending the life of existing asphalt, composite, or concrete pavements. Concrete overlays can address even the most challenging pavement preservation and rehabilitation situations. Many provide 30 to 40 years of service. This guide presents the basic principles that a pavement engineer needs to design and construct concrete overlays on existing asphalt, composite, and concrete pavements. The intent of this guide is to increase the technical proficiency of experienced engineers in the use of concrete overlays, provide less experienced users with the essential knowledge to address the needs of various types of concrete overlay projects, and help all users recognize the versatility of concrete overlays, whether on low-volume roads, city streets, primary roadways, or Interstate highways. Rather than as a step-by-step manual or series of prescriptive formulae, the material in this guide is presented in the form of expert guidance meant to supplement the professional experience of the reader.

Leif Wathne, Executive Vice President-ACPA, said, “The overlay guide is an outstanding resource for our agency partners, and will be invaluable to our efforts moving concrete overlays further towards becoming standard practice across the U.S.” The guide is disseminated under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and exists to guide the public in conjunction with Guide Specifications for Concrete Overlays (2016), Guide for the Development of Concrete Overlay Construction Documents (2018), Concrete Pavement Preservation Guide (new edition forthcoming), and History of Concrete Overlays in the United States (new edition forthcoming).
Whether for Interstate highways, primary roadways, city streets, low-volume roads, airport pavements, parking lots, trails, concrete overlays are a versatile tool in agencies’ overall asset management toolbox.
