“CEMEX create[s] Carbon Neutral Alliance in Germany”
GERMANY: Rüdersdorf Plant, Brandenburg, Germany:
CEMEX creates “Carbon Neutral Alliance” in Germany—March 19, 2021: As part of its “Future in Action” Program, CEMEX is developing a carbon-neutral alliance in Germany to test and accelerate innovative technologies to reach carbon neutrality at its Rüdersdorf Plant. CEMEX is joining pioneering industrial consortiums with the objective of developing industrial-scale demonstration projects utilizing ground-breaking technologies to form this alliance, which aspires to achieve carbon neutrality at the Rüdersdorf Plant by 2030. Several technologies are being evaluated, including:
• Waste heat recovery
• Carbon capture
• Transformation into building materials, synthetic fuels, and green hydrocarbons
• Hydrogen production with renewable energy
The technological learnings derived from the Rüdersdorf “Carbon Neutral Alliance” should gradually be shared with the CEMEX global portfolio of cement plants and adapted to local conditions to accelerate its decarbonization goals of the cement production process. Aligned to the vision of the European Commission’s Green Deal and climate aspirations, CEMEX communicated its vision for carbon neutrality in 2020. Stefan Schmorleiz, Plant Manager and Managing Director-CEMEX Zement GmbH said, “It is expected that CO2 will be further processed to convert to new forms of energy and materials for use locally by industrial, residential, and transport sectors. Together with our partners, we will take feasibility studies through to economic solutions to decarbonizing cement production.”

Environmental Excellence for Responsible Growth:
For CEMEX, reaching environmental excellence is a main objective, dedicating significant efforts to address key sustainability-related issues, from biodiversity and conservation to renewable energy, climate change, and emissions monitoring. As part of their core strategy, they strive to:
• Implement sustainable construction practices
• Develop products that help society meet green growth goals
• Significantly increase their use of low-carbon alternative fuels:
—Have reached 28% alternate fuels rate = highest in the past 4 years
• Replace traditional energy-intensive clinker with slag, fly ash, and pozzolans
—Contributed to a reduction in the CO2 footprint of their cementitious products
—(In 2019) CEMEX‘s overall clinker factor was 77.8% = down from 84.3% in 1990
—Out emissions of CO2-per-ton of cementitious product = dropped by 22.4% compared to 1990
As a result of CEMEX’s initiatives to reduce their clinker factor, increase the use of alternative fuels, and reduce their indirect emissions through renewable energy, they have avoided approximately 7.5 million tons of CO2 emissions vs. 1990 baseline. That’s comparable to offsetting the average annual emissions from electricity consumption of 1.6 million passenger vehicles! CEMEX has been working for more than a decade in the identification, documentation and registration of projects that mitigate carbon emissions below typical levels and generate equivalent offsets through programs such as the United Nations’ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)…

Carbon Footprint Tool CFT:
Used in all cement, aggregate and ready-mix sites under its operational control, the CEMEX CFT is central to CEMEX’s CO2 reduction efforts. It helps to quantify the direct and indirect amount of CO2 emitted during the production of products from birth to finished product:
• Embedded CO2 in raw materials
• Energy carriers
• Transports
• And more …

Committed to Net Zero C02:
CEMEX‘s Net-Zero CO2 Concrete Solution is the industry-first net-zero CO2 concrete, named Vertua. It is a cutting-edge material that reduces the carbon footprint by up to 70%—with remaining 30% footprint neutralized through offsetting efforts. Ventua is made possible due to an innovative solution created by the CEMEX Research and Development Center and is now internationally available, as CEMEX is focused on building a better future with concrete:
• Indispensable construction component
• Second-most consumed material on the planet, second only to water
• Cost-effective
• Versatile
• Typically made from local materials
• Lower heat generation
• Reduced cracking
• Workability / Consistency Retention
Construction needs to be balanced against its environmental effects, and challenges are best met by working in partnership with clients and stakeholders to innovate and develop solutions together. Vertua products range is an important step toward achieving net-zero CO2 in all of CEMEX‘s concretes globally. Commitment to Carbon Neutrality:
Achieving carbon neutrality in the cement production process will require groundbreaking innovation! A better future includes achieving carbon neutrality in operations and products, which includes:
• Providing low-carbon products for customers
• Continually lowering emissions in operations
• Partnering to find groundbreaking innovations
CEMEX is also applying to several European funds and national funding schemes, such as the Innovation Fund & Green Deal Call, for financial support and funding for innovations—potentially providing best practices to other industrial players. “Having already achieved a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions from 1990 10 years ahead of the original target, CEMEX‘s aspiration now moves to accelerate towards 55% by 2030 in Europe, and globally by 2050. We believe that driving down the CO2 footprint of our operations and products is urgent and critical for our industry. Together with our industrial partners, we are transforming our products and solutions in a collective ambition for a more sustainable world,” said Sergio Menendez, President-CEMEX-Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia.
