Professional development nonprofit organization The South Africa Road Federation (SARF) will continue to deliver accredited courses via Microsoft (MS) Teams throughout September, 2020—1-day, 2-day, and 3-day— with planning for courses later in the year. ISCP reported on the August courses in July. SARF is an organization dedicated to the promotion of the road industry in South Africa by dissemination of information, the promotion of sound policies, and by education and training. Training programs and courses are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa and are presented by industry experts “who are passionate about sharing the latest developments in their specialised fields with our delegates.” SARF trains more than 1,500 people annually, and South Africa’s road network needs to continue to be properly managed, preserved, upgraded, expanded, funded, and through ongoing capacity development and training of engineers, technologists and technicians who work in the road sector is essential.
Bryan Perrie, an ISCP Long-time Former Director and currently Managing Director-The Concrete Institute (TCI), will be a presenter for the September 1st course on “Concrete Road Design…”. New SARF courses are continually being developed and added in order to share the latest roads and engineering developments and technology. They include:
• Traffic Engineering
• Road Pavement Design
• Construction and Maintenance
• Environmental Management
• Design and Application of Concrete Roads
• Hot Mix Asphalt
• Urban Stormwater Drainage
• Road Safety Audits
• Bridge and Culvert Inspection
• Many more…
Individual concrete and construction course links are provided below, as well as the complete LIST of courses on the SARF online training page: https://sarf.org.za/sarf-courses/
“Ongoing training is vital to ensure our roads support the economy and South Africa cannot afford to lag behind what is happening internationally. Halting the training program will have serious consequences because practices are being developed and new technologies are continuously being introduced. We had over 50 training courses planned for 2020 and venues booked across South Africa and Namibia, however things changed very quickly and it became apparent that Covid-19 was here to stay for some time,” said Basil Jonsson, Operations Director-SARF.

“Community Engagement Course”
Mon. | SEPTEMBER 28, 2020
8:30 to 16:00 (SAST)/(UTC+02:00)
PRESENTER: Mr. Andrew Modise
INTRODUCTION: Many companies have developed sophisticated project management systems and processes to conceptualize, plan and implement construction projects and ave become adept in managing project risks. However, these companies have ignored to either include community engagement as part of the project planning process or to regard community risk as part of project risk.
It is critical for project managers to recognize local communities as key and direct stakeholders of a project—social activism, and exclusion or inclusion of communities as stakeholders can be a key determining factor as to whether such projects fail or succeed.
COURSE OVERVIEW: All the practical aspects of community engagement during the planning, implementation, and evaluation of construction projects. The course will include the following key focus areas:
• Understanding the Project Context
• Social, political and economic factor
• The Stake of Communities in Projects
• What makes local communities stakeholders in a project?
• The Community Consultation Process
• Community dynamics
• Community engagement
• Project Social Risk Management
• Identification, analysis and mitigation of community risk
Delegates can claim 1 ECSA or SACPCMP 6 CPD hours allocated
