The Australian Society for Concrete Pavements (ASCP) National Executive completed a six-month endeavor, developing the first of its industry briefing notes—Pavement Note 001 “Concrete Pavement Value: Economic, Operational and Community Benefits” which touts that CONCRETE PAVEMENTS SURPASS FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN ALL ASPECTS. Pavement Note 001 presents facts clearly and concisely, supports distinctive references as well as smart graphics. The information was based on a metareview of 15 published research reports, technical resources, and statistical information from well-known subject matter experts and technical organizations, including former ISCP President and ISCP Honorary Member, Dr. Mark B. Snyder. The intended audience is industry decision makers, funders, engineers, and highway technical staff; and the intended GOAL is to provide road agencies and decision makers with factual information to inform funding decisions that maximize economic, operational, and community value.
“Concrete pavements are significantly lower in construction cost, maintenance cost and, consequently, whole of life cost. Additionally, they are smooth, skid resistant, more rapidly constructed, less labour-intensive, less equipment-intensive, more durable, and more available in-service. As such, concrete pavements surpass asphalt pavements in all aspects.”
This two-page Pavement Note presents a summary of the 8 key benefits of concrete pavements when compared with asphalt pavements. Concrete road pavements present a number of economic, accessibility, and safety benefits when compared with flexible pavement options:
• LOWER CONSTRUCTION COST
• LOWER MAINTENANCE COSTS
• LOWER WHOLE OF LIFE COSTS
• EXTENDED LIFE BENEFITS
• CORRIDOR AVAILABILITY AND SAFETY
• SKID RESISTANCE AND SURFACE DRAINAGE
• MATCHED RIDE QUALITY
• HIGH-SPEED, LOW LABOUR AND PLANT
The Pavement Note explains that concrete pavements provide:
• 25% lower construction costs vs. full-depth asphalt
• 50 to 60% lower maintenance costs over a 40-year life span
• 50% fewer road closures and traffic disruptions
