2020 Gaynor Award Recipient
Jerry S. Haught PE, Consulting Engineer
The NRMCA Research Engineering and Standards (RES) Committee has selected Jerry S. Haught, PE, as the recipient of the 2020 Richard D. Gaynor Award for lifetime contributions that have positively impacted the ready mixed concrete industry.
Mr. Haught retired from CEMEX in 2019 and remains active as a consultant to the industry. Mr. Haught has worked in the ready mixed concrete industry for more than 30 years. He most recent position was serving as Vice President of Technical Services for CEMEX for Florida and the Western United States.
Mr. Haught earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University in 1981. He worked as a materials engineer with Williams and Associates-Clearwater, Florida; Laboratory Manager with KBC Consultants-Miami, Florida; and in 1989, he joined Rinker Materials-West Palm Beach, Florida. He was responsible for:
• Quality control
• Laboratory activities—a comprehensive and recognized program in the industry at Rinker
• Covered a region to corporate technical manager responsible for developing and implementing the company’s corporate quality management initiatives throughout the US
• 2005: gained a managerial role as a General Manager-various Florida regions
Following the Rinker acquisition by CEMEX, Jerry assumed responsibilities for CEMEX‘s ready mixed concrete facilities in Florida:
• Operations
• Maintenance
• Environmental
• Technical services
Mr. Haught was active in:
• CMEC, Florida
• Florida Concrete & Products Association
• ACI—served on committees on hot-weather concreting, high-strength concrete, and specifications
• NRMCA—member of the NRMCA RES Committee and strongly supported the association’s research initiatives, the efforts to evolve to performance-based specifications and initiatives to revise industry standards with a practical focus. Mr. Haught was Chair the NRMCA plant certification task group that under his tenure made several improvements to content and policy, including establishing an education and approval process for plant inspectors.
As a mentor, Mr. Haught has influenced many people who continue to be successful and credible in the ready mixed industry. He was never content with the status quo, so he demanded that the industry raise the bar on its technical proficiency, so that industry personnel are recognized as important stakeholders and partners in building structures that were reliable, durable, and economically feasible. Besides espousing these virtues to his reports, he advocated for this expertise in his activity with several outside organizations where he took leadership roles/broader managerial responsibilities toward the end of his career.
The Richard D. Gaynor AWARD symbolizes engineering excellence,
and given to an individual for lifetime contributions that have positively
impacted the ready mixed concrete industry.
The inscription reads:
