“Dear readers,

We have concluded the year 2019 with the “1st Concrete Roads Congress and Exhibition ” that was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and organized by the KGM and TÇMB with the technical support of EUPAVE. The congress took great attention and was attended by over 1000 people. Presentations from Belgium to USA, Chile to Germany, Poland to France showed that long-lasting concrete roads are considered as an alternative in many developed countries. Moreover, it was also emphasized that concrete roads were preferred especially on the roads with heavy vehicle traffic. At this congress, it was also announced that the “Concrete roads design guide” was published by KGM. Thus, after the publication of “Concrete roads construction guide” by KGM in December 2016, the missing issue of “How to design a concrete road?” was covered as of the end of 2019. I see all of the above mentioned developments, as the steps taken towards “breakage of the prejudices”, which is the most important obstacle to the use of concrete roads in our country. I hope that we will see in 2020 some concrete steps that will be taken by KGM for the use of concrete roads in Turkey.

In this issue, we also include the sections where we provide news about the activities of TÇMB units. Among them, in our economic assessment section you will find three articles compiled by our experts. Two of these present an outlook for both the EU and Turkish economy, while the third article includes developments concerning the cement sector in the Middle East. In the environmental news section, you will find various legislative information concerning the cement industry. One of them is the assessment of the waste oil management regulation. Moreover, we will also provide information about some of the activities that we have participated in, such as an assessment of the COP25 Climate Change Conference. On the other hand, you will also find information on colleague’s meetings and training programs organized by TÇMB’s education and training directorate in the past two months. Finally, in our R&D news section, we share the news that the TS 13879 Turkish standard entitled “Principles of Bulk Cement Transportation with Silo Trucks” has been published. Our R&D Department has been working on this standard since 2016.

As usual, we continue to promote our member plants and in this issue we introduce Limak Şanlıurfa Cement Plant. On the other hand, another news that you will find in this issue is about the architecture and design magazine BETONART, which has been published by TÇMB since 2004. BETONART, that brings its readers with architectural culture, design and technology, and includes examples of qualified and innovative use of concrete, has now celebrated its 15th anniversary. We convey our wishes to our sister magazine for many more years…

Finally, I would like to talk about a section that we have now established with this issue. In this new section, we will include the view of the cement sector on certain issues which is originally prepared by CEMBUREAU. The title that we will cover in this issue is “Circular Economy”. I hope that this section will also be of interest to you.

I wish, 2020 will bring to all of our readers health, success and happiness, I say goodbye until we meet in our next issue.” — Dr. Yaman
