“Determining Pavement Design Criteria for Recycled Aggregate Base
and Large Stone Subbase”

The overall goal of this project is to evaluate the performance of recycled materials and large stone subbase materials and develop a specification/guideline for their use in roadway bases. Test cells were constructed using recycled aggregate base (RAB) and large stone subbase (LSSB) layers for this project. The RAB layers were constructed at 300-mm thickness using two different recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) materials with different gradations and a blend of RCA and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) materials. The LSSB layers were constructed at 460-mm and 230-mm thicknesses using large crushed granite. Geosynthetics were included in several test cells to separate the subgrade and the LSSB layers and mitigate subgrade soil pumping into porous LSSB structure and rutting. This presentation will cover the summary of the after construction performance of test sections and their index and laboratory engineering properties.
