“SESPA” Held 3-Day Conference—Rare Annual Event, Latest Design Technologies

The Southeastern States Pavement Conference (SESPA) was held October 9-11, 2019 at the The Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, USA. This conference had been held for 8 consecutive  years (2002-2008), was revived in 2018 in West Virginia, and is a rare annual event for pavement management and pavement design professionals to come together.

Led by state highway officials, the organization counts as its voting members the state transportation agencies of Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. Presentations were given by:

• ODOT, ArDOT, LADOTD, TDOT, TxDOT, FLDOT;
• Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC), Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC);

Hosted by the Southeastern States Pavement Association, Inc.SESPA 2019 provided a regional forum for pavement professionals from the southeastern region of the United States and brought together pavement engineers from the southeastern region of the country to discuss pavement management, TAMP/PM2 rules, and pavement design-related issues. The three-day conference began with transportation asset management plan and pavement & bridge performance (TAMP/PM2) discussions, Next-Generation Pavement Performance Measures, business meetings, regional reports, Pavement ME, and panel discussions.

The 2nd day focused on technical tracks covering pavement management and pavement design presentations, and ISCP Member Eric Ferrebee, Technical Services Engineer at American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) participated with a presentation titled “Modern Methods for Concrete Pavement Design”. Focusing on the use of PavementDesigner.org and AASHTOWare’s Pavement ME design program, he reiterated the importance of migrating away from the AASHTO 93 pavement design system.
