Pavements constitute a large part of transportation infrastructure and transportation agencies are continually being asked to do more with less when maintaining their assets. Application of pavement preservation treatments can be very effective in sustainably extending performance-life depending on: WHEN—at the right time; WHERE—at the right place; and HOW—using appropriate, high-quality materials and construction.
In 2002, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) developed a Pavement Preservation Checklist Series to guide state and local highway preservation/maintenance and inspection staff on the use of innovative pavement preservation techniques.
In 2019—17 years later—to aid in the ongoing preservation effort, the FHWA worked with the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) to UPDATE its Pavement Preservation Checklists with numbers 17 through 23 covering concrete pavement preservation strategies. They updated 5 and wrote 2 NEW Concrete Pavement Preservation Checklists, that are now available for download (links below).
The 23 checklists include the following (Please click on each below to go to link):
• Joint and Crack Sealing
• Diamond Grinding
• Dowel-Bar Retrofit
• Partial-Depth Repair
• Full-Depth Repair
• Cross-Stitching
• Longitudinal Diamond Grooving
