  • Latest Advances in the Design and Construction of Roller Compacted Concrete Pavements: Wednesday   |   March 11   |   9:30 AM – 10:30 AM   |   Location: S232
Description: Roller compacted concrete (RCC) pavements are used where speed of construction, strength, especially early strength and economy are the main criteria. Although RCC continues to be used for heavy-duty pavements including ports and intermodal facilities, there has been a dramatic increase in its use for rural roads, residential streets and commercial parking lots. Increased RCC pavement utilization has been fueled by recent advances in design and construction means and methods. This presentation will cover the fundamentals of designing, mixing and placing RCC, use of admixtures, and case studies including long-term performance that will help explain the factors in constructing high quality RCC.
Wayne Adaska, Director, Pavements-Portland Cement Association
Corey Zollinger, Director, Paving Solutions-CEMEX and Secretary-Treasurer-ISCP
Fares Abdo, Director, Technical Services-Morgan Corp.
    Learning Objectives:
    1. Gain an understanding of the fundamentals of RCC – its benefits and limitations.
    2. Learn how to design an RCC mixture emphasizing the important factors that have a dramatic effect on the end result, including the use of admixtures.
    3. Explain the construction process from the importance of a test section through subgrade preparation, mixing, placing, finishing and curing. Specific case studies will be used to help explain the process
  • Design and Construction of Concrete Parking Areas and Site Paving:
    Wednesday   |   March 11   |   11:00 AM – 12:30 PM   |   Location: S232
    Tim Cost, President-V.T. Cost Consulting
    Brian Killingsworth, Executive VP-NRMCA
Description: This program will focus on best practices for designing, planning, and building concrete pavements for parking lots and industrial or trucking facilities, with emphasis on the guidance provided by ACI 330 documents. Proper thickness and jointing, subgrade preparation, materials, testing, and selection of methods and equipment will be covered. Examples of both successful projects and practices to avoid will be shared throughout.
    Learning objectives:
    1. Learn how to select proper design details for parking and site paving projects.
    2. Understand how to avoid uncontrolled cracking and construction-related issues.
    3. Understand how to choose methods and equipment best suited for quality, cost-effective projects.
  • Performance Engineered Concrete Mixtures for Pavements
    Thursday   |   March 12   |   1:00 PM – 2:30 PM   |   Location: S232
Gordon Smith, Asso. Director-CP Tech Center
    Peter Taylor, Director-CP Tech Center
Description: The topic of concrete mixture design, proportioning, and testing of those mixtures to survive their environment is gaining nationwide attention, as evidenced in a trend toward consideration of performance based specifications. Tighter budgets, higher maintenance costs, fewer employees, sustainability pressures and concerns about long term concrete pavement durability are contributing to a call to better understand the parameters that influence critical performance for concrete mixtures.
Agencies and contractors are responding to this new engineering approach to ensure that concrete mixtures achieve their design expectations. While owners are primarily concerned with long-term performance, including strength and durability, contractors are focused on constructability issues like workability, setting and early strength.
    Learning Objectives:
    1. Explore the critical concrete mixture design decisions related to these needs.
    2. Consider the work being done with respect to proportioning as an iterative process based on aggregate and paste systems.
    3. Discover a new generation of test methods that assess the properties of a mixture that directly affect the potential longevity of a pavement mixture.
