In 2006, the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) released what has become a landmark reference manual on Integrated Materials and Construction Practices for Concrete Pavement (IMCP Manual), used by a wide range of concrete pavement practitioners. Since its 1st Edition 13 years ago, the field has continued to grow and interest in sustainable road-building practices has multiplied. It became increasingly apparent that an updated IMCP Manual is needed to reflect recent innovations, research, and common practice in producing smooth long-lasting concrete pavements. Therefore, the CP Tech Center released a next-generation manual once again aiming to bridge the gap between research/technological innovation and practice by providing practitioners the best available knowledge in a practical form.
The updated IMCP manual titled “Integrated Materials and Construction Practices for Concrete Pavement: A State-of-the-Practice ManualSecond Edition – May 2019”, emphasizes concrete as a material and how its quality is affected by all aspects of a given paving project. The text discusses tests for evaluating the multiple properties governing pavement performance to enable practitioners to design and deliver pavements that are able to resist the environmental challenges they face:
Abstract: At the heart of all concrete pavement projects is the concrete itself. This manual is intended as both a training tool and a reference to help concrete paving engineers, designers, quality control personnel, contractors, suppliers, technicians, and tradespeople bridge the gap between the most recent research and practice to optimize the performance of concrete for pavements. With the first edition published at the end of 2006, this second edition provides an update and refresh to help users of this guide do the following:
- Understand concrete pavement construction as a complex, integrated system involving several discrete practices that interrelate and a ect one another in various ways
- Understand and implement technologies, tests, and best practices to identify materials, concrete properties, and construction practices that are known to optimize concrete performance
- Recognize factors that lead to premature distress in concrete and learn how to avoid or reduce those factors
- Quickly access how-to and troubleshooting information
This second edition includes a new chapter on the Basics of Concrete Pavement Sustainability and a chapter that was merged into one from two chapters in the first edition (Preparation for Concrete Placement and Construction).
