In the heart of the vibrant city of Boulder, Colorado, USA is a six-block concrete pavement along Mapleton Avenue, which continues its service to the city after more than nine decades. Built in 1927, and with minimal maintenance over the years, the concrete pavement stands as an exceptional and durable example of concrete put to the test. Located in the Mapleton Hill Historic District, this historic section of Mapleton Avenue is lined with some of the oldest residences in Boulder boasting excellent quality of life with breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains, Flatirons rock formations, popular Pearl Street Mall attractions, and the campus of the University of Colorado-Boulder. This historic section of Mapleton Avenue has contributed to economic development—mining camps, the discovery of gold, and the growth of the University of Colorado.
The Mapleton Avenue project was formally recognized with an American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) Lifetime Pavement Recognition Award in May 2019. Angela Folkestad, Executive Director of the Colorado/Wyoming Chapter-ACPA, had the opportunity to present the award to the members of the City of Boulder’s Transportation Advisory Board (TAB). She stated, “Boulder is a very bike-centric community, and the TAB does a bike tour every year with city transportation staff to look at different parts of the city. One of the board members mentioned that they had toured Mapleton within the last several years, and Gerrit Slatter, Principal Engineer for Transportation Capital Projects-Boulder, first drew their attention to this long-life pavement.”
Gerald F. Voigt, President and CEO-ACPA added, “It also serves as a reminder of the impact solid infrastructure can have on a community.”
