“Alkali-Silica-Reaction (ASR) Potential for Concrete Pavement Damage:
Background, Prevention Measures, & Repair”
• The basics of ASR, conditions in Concrete Pavements,
and current approaches to prevent such damages in pavements
Ing. Rolf Breitenbücher, Professor-Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany) & Director-ISCP
Numerous damage in concrete pavements caused by an Alkali-Silica-Reaction (ASR) are known worldwide. Although this destructive reaction in concrete has been investigated intensely for common concrete structures, special effects such as external alkali-supply via de-icing agents and microcracking in the concrete matrix caused by the continuously passing traffic can greatly influence ASR in concrete pavements. There are different approaches to preventing ASR such as the limitation of the alkali content in the binder or the use of a special selection of aggregates with respect to their ASR-sensitivity.
In this webinar, an overview of the reaction mechanisms, suitable prevention measures (incl. current successful regulations in guidelines), evaluation procedures of in-situ ASR-afflicted pavements, and appropriate repair measures (e.g. hydrophobing or top layer replacement) will be provided.
