VISION2040 is a must-read resource for anyone with an interest in the future of the concrete pavement industry! With the generous contributions of a blue-ribbon panel of 25 experts from the concrete pavement industry, academia, transportation owners/agencies, and concrete production, the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) has officially released the final copy of “VISION2040: The Future of Concrete Pavement Imagined”. The panel was presented four broad questions and asked to share their experiences, expertise, and ideas as they formulated responses. They continued their research and fact-finding, all with the goal of developing a snapshot of what transportation and concrete pavements will look like as we move toward the year 2040.
Against the backdrop of a projected 2018–2040 U.S. population gain of 70 million, coupled with a 40%+ climb in freight over present volume, the panel assessed such factors as increasing truck traffic and heavier loads; autonomous vehicles; e-commerce and distribution of goods; dedicated freight network possibilities; and alternative roadway ownership models. Contributing to the discussion were Jerry Voigt, President-ACPA; Lori Tiefenthaler, 2017 ACPA Chairman and Lehigh Hanson Inc.; James Mack, 2019 Chairman and Cemex USA; Jeremy Gregory, Executive Director-Concrete Sustainability Hub-MIT; and Kevin Klein, Gomaco Corporation.
This 16-page, four-color VISION2040 publication forecasts what concrete pavement technology will look like as we move closer to the year 2040, and:
- Describes how the concrete paving industry’s product and industry are changing to adapt to and envelop new technologies
- Provides a glimpse of the future of transportation policy, planning, and project execution over the next 20 years
- Describes anticipated project owner/agency needs
- Forecasts how rigid pavements will serve various functions
- Explains how how the association and allies will shape the future … and what great potential exists if we invest and collaborate effectively along the way
- Indicates the great potential for infrastructure safety, performance and value if stakeholders invest and collaborate effectively along the way
- Describes the genesis and background of the VISION2040 project (including a listing of the people serving on the blue-ribbon panel that contributed ideas, information and guidance)
