December 18-19, 2018, the Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) and American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) welcomed concrete pavement professionals from across the United States who convened for the Annual Concrete Overlay Summit. Organized by the CP Tech Center and held at ACPA’s Chicago, Illinois headquarters, the two-day meeting gave ACPA National staff, the CP Tech Center, and state/regional promotion groups the opportunity to compare notes and discuss timely topics. The meeting provided a good opportunity for industry engineers/promoters to gather and talk about what works and what doesn’t, in a continuing effort to advance the art and science of concrete overlays. More than a dozen states and regions were represented in the meeting.
Topics of discussion for the group included state-by-state reviews of successes and concerns relative to concrete overlay:
- Design
- Construction
- Performance
- Summary of recently-completed technical documents
- Successes
- Overlay performance & promotion strategy
- Optimized joint spacing
- Other topics …
The group considered future needs in the areas of:
- Research
- Field trials
- Internal curing
- Technology transfer
- Implementation
- Overlay Performance
- Discussion about promotion
Participants offered additional insight into:
- Overlay success stories in Indiana
- Performance of overlays in Michigan & Minnesota
- Research on the use of fiber, joint optimization, and internal curing in Minnesota and Iowa
The CP Tech Center provided an update on some of its recent publications, including the Guide for Development of Concrete Overlay Construction Documents (left) and the Guide for Concrete Pavement Distress Assessments and Solutions (right), as they related to concrete overlays.
