Fiber Reinforced Concrete Overview for Concrete Pavement and Overlays

There are many types and geometries of fibers available for concrete material applications. This webinar will give a general overview of fibers used for concrete pavements with an emphasis on macrofibers. The effect of macrofibers on the fresh and hardened concrete properties will also be discussed, especially for application to concrete paving mixtures. Furthermore, the main concrete test methods required to specify macrofibers for overlays will be presented. Finally, the current best practices for constructing concrete overlays with macrofibers will be reviewed from the batching process to the joint sawcutting operations.

Effect of Macrofibers on Behavior and Performance of Concrete Slabs and Overlays

There have been significant developments in macrofiber products and complementary research demonstrating their impact on concrete pavements.  This webinar will review the significant research findings of macrofiber addition to concrete slabs on grade, which include the increase in plain concrete slab capacity and reduction in crack widths with use of macrofibers. Similarly, a summary of studies will be presented that have evaluated the increase in pavement performance when macrofibers are added to concrete pavement and overlays.  Finally, the increase in load capacity and service life of fiber reinforced concrete overlays will be linked to hardened property tests that pavement engineers can specify for designs.

Overview of Macrofiber Software and Guidelines for Concrete Overlay Design

A macrofiber software tool and accompanying documentation has been developed to assist pavement engineers in designing concrete overlays with fiber reinforced concrete. This webinar will provide an overview of the macrofiber software for determining the recommended fiber reinforced concrete residual strength values for application to concrete overlay design. In particular, the inputs and factors affecting the required fiber reinforced concrete content will be discussed, as well as integration of the calculated residual strength with the existing concrete pavement overlay design methods. Finally, guidance will be provided on how specifications can be adapted to include macrofibers in concrete overlays in order to make sure the designer’s intentions for the fiber reinforced concrete are met in the construction phase.
