PCA Names “2018 Gleason Award Recipients”

The John P. Gleason, Jr., Leadership Awards honor Portland Cement Association (PCA) members who have exhibited industry leadership by advancing key Association programs and initiatives. The awards were presented on August 29, 2018 during the PCA Summer Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Allen Hamblen, President and CEO-PCA and Chairman-CalPortland Company said, “The Gleason Awards are a unique industry honor, and an excellent way to show appreciation for individuals who have raised the bar on leadership and commitment to have a positive impact on our industry and its future.”

The awards are named after John “Jay” Gleason who served as PCA President from 1986 until his retirement in 2007. Gleason was known for his consensus building among both members and allies, and for his strong leadership skills. He excelled at recognizing long-term opportunities and strived to bring more of a market focus to PCA programs. During his tenure, PCA membership rose from 57% to 98% in the U.S. industry. In 1987, he championed the spin-off of CTLGroup, then Construction Technology Laboratories, as a for-profit subsidiary. He also created the Education Foundation with personal funds.
