New Program Manager Sought for PCC Research Lab at ISU, Iowa, USA

Applications are being accepted through May 25, 2018 for a new Program Manager at the Portland Cement Concrete Research Laboratory (PCC Lab) located in the Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering (CCEE) and the Institute for Transportation (InTrans) at the campus of Iowa State University (ISU).

The successful applicant will service as a lab supervisor and manager for the PCC Lab housed in Town Engineering and manage field activities under the guidance of the PCC lab. Jointly administered by InTrans and the Iowa State Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, the position will supervise all personnel working within the laboratory including faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, visiting scholars, and post-doctoral researchers.

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and related experience.

Experience Preferred:

  • Experience maintaining and building equipment
  • Experience as an Industrial or Mechanical Engineer
  • Experience specifying and integrating software, sensors, data acquisition
  • Experience with control equipment and implementation of control algorithms along with general scientific equipment design and maintenance
  • Experience communicating with the concrete research community and industry outside of ISU
  • Transportation-related experience
  • Experience which demonstrates expertise in developing technical workshop materials

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Laboratory operations that include provision of safe and reliable laboratory working conditions for all researchers
  • Equipment design and maintenance
  • Communication with researchers on new technology and laboratory problem solutions
  • Training, and general operations
  • Collaborating with researchers on proposal development and submission
  • Developing safety procedures and processes
  • Writing and submitting research reports and other technical publications
  • Presenting research results at professional meetings
  • Communicating with the concrete research community and industry outside of ISU—
    when appropriate

This position will coordinate lab equipment use, as well as materials supplies and research operations with project PIs. This position will manage costs control and accounting of equipment use for project billing to cover laboratory expenses. Experience is required in specifying and integrating software, sensors, data acquisition, instrumentation and control equipment; and applying theory and implementation of control algorithms, along with general scientific equipment design and maintenance.

The successful candidate will possess knowledge of laboratory safety standards, thorough understanding of content area, and the ability to monitor and maintain accurate records. The candidate will possess demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity as this position works with a broad and diverse group of individuals both on and off campus.
