Baldwin Street, in the city of Dunedin on New Zealand’s South Island, is officially the world’s steepest residential road. At its steepest, the slope has a gradient of 35%. Captain Baldwin, after whom the street was named, was a newspaper proprietor and gold pioneer in the area in 1900. Individual 10-acre sections were not wide enough to allow a zig zag in the road, so it had to be built straight. The Community Constable said the road is a challenge for many thrill seekers … runners, downhill cyclists, skateboarders, etc, which makes it quite dangerous if they are not cautious.
So what’s it like to live on a road which must strike fear into the hearts of postmen and paper boys? View the video to find out!! Includes Dave Cole, Mayor of Dunedin, Dr. Gary Blackman, Historian, and Brenden Thompson, Community Constable. Enjoy!
